The two biggest reasons I’ve heard are that Electron apps can be bloated (using up tons of RAM) and that they don’t look or act like native apps. For example, on macOS, you would expect the stoplight red/yellow/green buttons in the upper left, but on Windows, you’d expect the red box with a white X in the upper right.Įlectron apps have a bad reputation, and I’ve been trying to figure out why. ![]() Then the developer can use the HTML and CSS to make it look appropriate for the operating system you’re on. The advantage from a developer’s point of view is that they can write one set of code for macOS, Windows, and Linux to perform the necessary functions of an app. The panties in a bunch part is that starting with 1Password 8, which is now out in public beta, 1Password is no longer a native Mac app, it’s an Electron app.Įlectron apps are kind of like web apps, in that they’re written in JavaScript, HTML, and CSS. I won’t try to replicate what he explains, but the bottom line is that their new approach has gotten the Internet’s collective panties in a bunch. He describes the challenges of keeping multiple teams developing independently and yet in parallel along with a server-side team and how this approach slowed them down from doing the enhancements they wanted to do. Michael Fey wrote a blog post at explaining how 1Password has evolved over time as they went from a Mac app alone to adding iOS, Android, Windows and Linux applications. This week they have a new target for their hand wringing, and it’s the changes that the folks at AgileBits announced about 1Password. Especially when trial accounts will become "frozen", no entry modification/creation, but the accounts will be accessible, accounts under a family plan should really behave similarly to "frozen" expired trial accounts when removed from a family plan.Last week every single Apple-centric podcast was busy with hand wringing about Apple’s new child protection efforts. Removing access from shared vaults, yes, but to outright delete their own personal accounts doesn't make a whole lot of sense. There's a few forum post asking about this exact situation, and honestly I don't think family organizers should be able to do this. I suppose only be part of a family plan if you really trust a person, or move to an individual plan. I was wrong it does appear that family organizers can suspend/delete individuals under a family plan, including private vaults. As long as you keep your accounts under your own vault and not a shared vault there will be no compromises. ![]() All members under a family plan will have their own private vaults in which no other family member will be able to access. Thank you again for sharing your concerns, and – open offer for anyone who sees this – please let me know if I can help more with your specific situation!įamily accounts do not operate in this manner. I know there's more we can do here going forward, and I will share feedback with the team. If a customer's family situation is such that they are not certain their data will be safe with these permissions in the hands of the Family Organizers, I would suggest they instead create an individual account where they have full control of their own data. They also have the ability to suspend or delete family members, including deleting all their data, even the Private vault.īecause of the power granted to Family Organizers, I strongly recommend that you only join a family account with/grant the role of Family Organizer to very close family members that you trust. Family Organizers are not able to access the contents of other family members' Private vaults, but they can access any user-created vault on the account. □Ĭurrently, any designated Family Organizers on a 1Password Families account have a significant amount of control over the account.
